Cocker Spaniels - Rescues - Notes on History
Cocker Spaniels make up a large group of breeds referred to as Spaniels. There are a few different reports as to the origin of Spaniels. Some claim that Spaniels were brought to Ireland by the Celts. According to them, the name of the breed stems from a Punic word "Span" meaning "a rabbit." Hence, Spaniels were long-eared dogs used to hunt the rabbit.
However, the most accepted and true-to-life version states that Spaniels originated in Spain. They could have also been popular on the border of France and Spain. They were used in hunting and retrieving game both on land and water. As time went on, each breed acquired its own specification.
Cocker Spaniels were famous for their outstanding ability to flush, hunt, and retrieve the woodcock. They were a smaller variety of land Spaniels used in England in the 1800s. The English Cocker Spaniel became very popular in Europe and breeders and owners from all over the world started to import individual dogs contributing to the breed's distribution worldwide.
American breeders began to produce a slightly different version of the breed. The dog was smaller, with a longer coat, a shorter muzzle, and a more rounded skull. The American version was so successful in the United States that breeders initiated a sort of campaign making AKC officials approve of the new breed. English Cocker lovers who were eager to preserve the breed's appearance and working qualities supported their efforts.
The now two separate breeds co-exist peacefully each enjoying their share of fame. American Cocker Spaniels are especially loved in America. According to AKC statistics based on the number of litters registered every year, the American Cocker has been the most popular breed 25 times. The breed is known in the country as "the Cocker."
The name "Cocker Spaniel" is referred to English Cockers in Europe and other countries. They are extremely popular in Great Britain, their native country. Cocker Spaniels have retained their hunting instincts and serve as hunting dogs.
